Since 1987, the Ibero Foster Care Program has worked to provide culturally relevant family settings to Latino children who can't be cared for in their homes. The program strive to minimize the length of stay of children in foster care by working towards reunification of the biological family, when appropriate. Foster care parents offer children the daily care, guidance and affection they need while the children are away from home.

What type of child may need foster care services?

When difficult situations at home require intervention from the outside, the Monroe Family Court will place children in Foster Care. These children need extra loving care and attention to their special needs.

Foster children may:

  • have siblings and need to be placed with them as a group

  • be sexually or physically abused
  • be a neglected child
  • have special educational needs
  • display unmanageable behavior
  • possess a handicapping condition and require special care

Many children in foster care are reunited with their parents. Others may be adopted.

What special qualities does foster parenting require?

    Foster parents are people who:

  • are bilingual (Spanish and English)
  • can cope with stressful situations
  • can work effectively as members of a team with social workers and the child's own family
  • feel comfortable as a substitute parent for children, providing them with food, shelter, discipline, and love
  • help social workers prepare the chlid to be reunited with parents, to be adopted, or to live independently

Who can become a foster parent?

You can apply to become a foster parent if you are at least 21 years old and have your own income. You must have enough living space for the child, be willing to attend special training sessions to help you understand and cope with the special needs of a foster child, agree to have a physical examination, and be cleared by the New York State Child Abuse Registry.

What are the benefits of foster parenting?

As a foster parent, you will be compensated in many ways. The trust, affection, and love you receive from a child in need is perhaps the best gift of all. In addition, you will receive a stipend to cover the child's expenses while he/she resides with you.

Ibero's Foster Care Program is looking for special people to join our family of foster parents. We're looking for people like you.
